If you didn’t think August could get any hotter, you weren’t thinking about DFTH. Jill Parker joins us the weekend of August 22nd for two days of workshops and two shows! Friday night will include a welcome reception/hafla with performances by featured dancers at the DFTH Studio. A laid back evening in an intimate setting is the perfect way to kick off a great weekend! Beginning Saturday morning, Jill will be teaching 4 workshops throughout the weekend. Saturday night’s Gala Show will turn the heat up even more with performances by Jill, the DFTH Company, and special guests. You won’t want to miss this! There are still a few class spots open, and tickets for either show (or both!!) are available on the DFTH website (http://www.dfth.org/workshops.htm).
We’ve added some new classes to our lineup. Jonathan Stein’s Acro Yoga from the Heart on Wednesday nights is a sensation! Madison McBurney has joined us as a hoop instructor, with classes on Monday and Thursday evenings. Our own Jade Gibson has added classes on Thursday nights, challenging dancers at every level. New to the schedule for August: Zymirrah will be teaching a beginner friendly, donation-based community yoga class on Tuesday mornings. Check out our schedule and find classes sure to spice up your movement or fitness regimen!
We are currently searching for a jazz teacher to take over an existing class on Tuesday nights. If you know anyone that fits the bill, please ask them to email Kimberly at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
As always, DFTH could use a few helping hands! We’re seeking volunteers for our August show and a number of other supportive tasks within the organization. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Anne at email@example.com. If you have some time, a creative spirit, and computer skills, please contact us!
We would like to welcome a new addition to our company: Patsy Bucki! Patsy joined the ranks officially in January, and we are pleased to have her with us! She rounds out the list of 2014 company members, including: Andrea Ghotekar, Jade Gibson, Amanda Lindsey, Karen Millerchip, Leslie Mims, Suzy Minor, and Jenny Trimmer. Anne Caruthers and Kimberly Larkspur are still in the roles of company directors, with Anne leading the Creative Vision and Kimberly continuing the Artistic Direction of the group.
DFTH was honored to be included in Dance Houston’s 12th Annual Festival on February 8th at the Wortham. Dancing on the Cullen Theatre stage was a wonderful experience. Our thanks to Director Andrea Cody for the opportunity.
At our studio fundraiser in June, local dancers brought their wares to sell in support of the DFTH studio. With everything from costuming and jewelry to fudge available, the attendees had a great selection of goodies to choose from. There were happy customers and happy raffle winners! We want to express our gratitude to all that participated and helped make the day a success.
With many performances in the past year, the company continues to evolve as a group and in their independent projects. We spent some time with Leslie Scates digging into Contact Improvisation as part of the ongoing development offerings to the company. Joined by our much-loved ballet instructor, Joe Modlin, we spent an afternoon with Leslie expanding our awareness of each other in a cohesive group and learning to improvise in exciting new ways. Additionally, several company members have taken up the challenge to develop pieces on their own in the DFTH format. They have spent a great deal of time working on some wonderful stories. You can see the results of all that work in our August show!
You will find many DFTH company members on stage at the Third Coast Tribal Festival in Fort Worth in January 2014. Check out the Thursday and Saturday shows to see what we have in store!
When she’s not jamming to metal or being her own mechanic, company member Leslie Mims can be found at the DFTH studio. The enigmatic Pisces brings a touch of mystery and romance to the DFTH Company. Her fluidity and grace make every performance a delight to watch! Dance has been a part of Leslie’s life since she was a little girl taking ballet and tap. She first found belly dance five years ago at the Oasis Belly Dance Studio in Lafayette, Louisiana. In 2009 Leslie returned to Houston where she discovered the world of fusion belly dance. She was invited to join the DFTH Company in 2011. As a DFTH company member, Leslie has spent the past 2 years growing both as a dancer and as a performer, pushing the boundaries of her comfort zone and exploring new ways to bring her dance to life.
In addition to her work with DFTH, she is one third of the fusion troupe Inamorata alongside her dance sisters (and fellow company members) Andrea Ghotekar and Kimberly Piwetz. Leslie’s creativity and unique spirit also find an outlet through Birds of a Feather Bindi. Her handcrafted bindis are beautiful reusable designs that make a striking addition to any costume much as her talents have made her a fantastic addition to the DFTH Company!
